Great article. I think most, if not all, Black people can definitely relate.
However, one of your statements bothered me. You said you only represent yourself but that is untrue.
For better or worse, what you do is as a Black individual does reflect on the whole Black race. All other races know this for their own race and all other races act accordingly because they are well aware that their actions matter to their race as a whole.
This idea of being worried about being perceived as the “angry Black woman” is because there are enough angry Black women (and justifiably so whilst living in a racist world) that it became a stereotype or one representation of Black women.
We should all be proud of who God created us to be. I don’t want to to erased. I want to be accepted for me being me..
I really liked your article and I do agree that there needs to be more diversity for so many reasons but also because none of us want to the token in the room. I have experienced this and it is uncomfortable. I always thought it was just me who felt this way because I would see other Black people who seemed comfortable in a predominantly white setting and even thriving. However, as I got older, I was able to see the hints of discomfort of those lone Black people and I realized I just hadn’t read their cues correctly.
Here’s to us having more Black-owned businesses so we can create the companies that we wish to see. ✊🏾Peace.
